World champion Yan Zibei took the crown in the men's 100m breaststroke in 59.07 seconds, with Wang Lizhuo from Heilongjiang and Yu Zongda from Hubei rounding out the top three.
Zhang also broke the national record in the women's 100m freestyle on Sunday.
"I really wanted to give an effort here. It's my Achilles that didn't have enough to properly heal after the [US] Open. I was able to get it somewhat better, but just looking long-term in this tournament, will I be able to get through enough matches? For me, I don't think I could," said the three-time Roland Garros champion.
Seventh seed Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic is also through after she overcame Jasmine Paolini of Italy 6-3, 6-3.
