1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "How farewell?" exclaimed Julie; "do you leave us thus, sosuddenly, without any preparations for your journey, withouteven a passport?"
2. "My name must rest unknown, -- merely say I am a Frenchmantravelling for pleasure." As soon as Gaetano had transmittedthis answer, the sentinel gave an order to one of the menseated round the fire, who rose and disappeared among therocks. Not a word was spoken, every one seemed occupied,Franz with his disembarkment, the sailors with their sails, the smugglers with their goat; but in the midst of all thiscarelessness it was evident that they mutually observed eachother. The man who had disappeared returned suddenly on theopposite side to that by which he had left; he made a signwith his head to the sentinel, who, turning to the boat, said, "S'accommodi." The Italian s'accommodi isuntranslatable; it means at once, "Come, enter, you arewelcome; make yourself at home; you are the master." It islike that Turkish phrase of Moliere's that so astonished thebourgeois gentleman by the number of things implied in itsutterance. The sailors did not wait for a second invitation;four strokes of the oar brought them to land; Gaetano sprangto shore, exchanged a few words with the sentinel, then hiscomrades disembarked, and lastly came Franz. One of his gunswas swung over his shoulder, Gaetano had the other, and asailor held his rifle; his dress, half artist, half dandy, did not excite any suspicion, and, consequently, nodisquietude. The boat was moored to the shore, and theyadvanced a few paces to find a comfortable bivouac; but, doubtless, the spot they chose did not suit the smuggler whofilled the post of sentinel, for he cried out, "Not thatway, if you please."
3. "But why, mother?"
4. "So serious, sire, that when the circumstance surprised mein the midst of a family festival, on the very day of mybetrothal, I left my bride and friends, postponingeverything, that I might hasten to lay at your majesty'sfeet the fears which impressed me, and the assurance of mydevotion."
5. "And did your superior order you to treat me in this way?"
6. "Is it possible?" asked the count, assuming all air and toneof the utmost simplicity and candor. "Is it possible thatThomson & French are not looked upon as safe and solventbankers? Pray tell me what you think, baron, for I feeluneasy, I can assure you, having some considerable propertyin their hands."

1. "How so?" returned the count, with surprise.
2. "Because Don Carlos has fled from Bourges, and has returnedto Spain."
3. "Certainly. But make haste -- I cannot stay here all day."Other footsteps, going and coming, were now heard, and amoment afterwards the noise of rustling canvas reachedDantes' ears, the bed creaked, and the heavy footfall of aman who lifts a weight sounded on the floor; then the bedagain creaked under the weight deposited upon it.
4. "Sometimes," said he, "in my voyages, when I was a man andcommanded other men, I have seen the heavens overcast, thesea rage and foam, the storm arise, and, like a monstrousbird, beating the two horizons with its wings. Then I feltthat my vessel was a vain refuge, that trembled and shookbefore the tempest. Soon the fury of the waves and the sightof the sharp rocks announced the approach of death, anddeath then terrified me, and I used all my skill andintelligence as a man and a sailor to struggle against thewrath of God. But I did so because I was happy, because Ihad not courted death, because to be cast upon a bed ofrocks and seaweed seemed terrible, because I was unwillingthat I, a creature made for the service of God, should servefor food to the gulls and ravens. But now it is different; Ihave lost all that bound me to life, death smiles andinvites me to repose; I die after my own manner, I dieexhausted and broken-spirited, as I fall asleep when I havepaced three thousand times round my cell."
5. "Exactly."
6. "Then you yourself are one of these marked beings?"

1. "Why, what good would it do?" asked Caderousse. "If the poorlad were living, and came to me and begged that I wouldcandidly tell which were his true and which his falsefriends, why, perhaps, I should not hesitate. But you tellme he is no more, and therefore can have nothing to do withhatred or revenge, so let all such feeling be buried withhim."
2. "As to the mother of the young man" -- repeated the Italian, with anxiety.
3. "If you ask him he says Sinbad the Sailor; but I doubt if itbe his real name."
4. "Forgive me," replied Morrel; "I will go away."
5. "Yes," replied Maximilian, "an Englishman, who representedhimself as the confidential clerk of the house of Thomson &French, at Rome. It was this that made me start when yousaid the other day, at M. de Morcerf's, that Messrs. Thomson& French were your bankers. That happened, as I told you, in1829. For God's sake, tell me, did you know thisEnglishman?"
6. Horticulture seemed, however, to have been abandoned in thedeserted kitchen-garden; and where cabbages, carrots, radishes, pease, and melons had once flourished, a scantycrop of lucerne alone bore evidence of its being deemedworthy of cultivation. A small, low door gave egress fromthe walled space we have been describing into the projectedstreet, the ground having been abandoned as unproductive byits various renters, and had now fallen so completely ingeneral estimation as to return not even the one-half percent it had originally paid. Towards the house thechestnut-trees we have before mentioned rose high above thewall, without in any way affecting the growth of otherluxuriant shrubs and flowers that eagerly dressed forward tofill up the vacant spaces, as though asserting their rightto enjoy the boon of light and air. At one corner, where thefoliage became so thick as almost to shut out day, a largestone bench and sundry rustic seats indicated that thissheltered spot was either in general favor or particular useby some inhabitant of the house, which was faintlydiscernible through the dense mass of verdure that partiallyconcealed it, though situated but a hundred paces off.

1. Ali left the room. The cups of coffee were all prepared, with the addition of sugar, which had been brought forAlbert. Monte Cristo and Haidee took the beverage in theoriginal Arabian manner, that is to say, without sugar.Haidee took the porcelain cup in her little slender fingersand conveyed it to her mouth with all the innocentartlessness of a child when eating or drinking somethingwhich it likes. At this moment two women entered, bringingsalvers filled with ices and sherbet, which they placed ontwo small tables appropriated to that purpose. "My dearhost, and you, signora," said Albert, in Italian, "excuse myapparent stupidity. I am quite bewildered, and it is naturalthat it should be so. Here I am in the heart of Paris; but amoment ago I heard the rumbling of the omnibuses and thetinkling of the bells of the lemonade-sellers, and now Ifeel as if I were suddenly transported to the East; not suchas I have seen it, but such as my dreams have painted it.Oh, signora, if I could but speak Greek, your conversation, added to the fairy-scene which surrounds me, would furnishan evening of such delight as it would be impossible for meever to forget."
2. "I will hasten," replied Franz.
3. "I will leave you the torch, sir."
4、 "Are you fond of horses, count?"
5、 "Then," said Monte Cristo, "here are 200,000 francs goneafter" --

      "I understand," said Monte Cristo; "you wish to tell me youhave hunted the lion?" Ali smiled with triumphant pride ashe signified that he had indeed both chased and capturedmany lions. "But do you believe you could arrest theprogress of two horses rushing forwards with ungovernablefury?" The Nubian smiled. "It is well," said Monte Cristo."Then listen to me. Ere long a carriage will dash past here,drawn by the pair of dappled gray horses you saw me withyesterday; now, at the risk of your own life, you mustmanage to stop those horses before my door."}

In three days he had succeeded, with the utmost precaution,in removing the cement, and exposing the stone-work. Thewall was built of rough stones, among which, to givestrength to the structure, blocks of hewn stone were atintervals imbedded. It was one of these he had uncovered, and which he must remove from its socket.
