His insufferable smile was more complacent than ever.Holmes thought for a little. "As he spoke he opened a door and showed the way into a roomwhich appeared to be very richly furnished, but again the only lightwas afforded by a single lamp half-turned down. The chamber wascertainly large, and the way in which my feet sank into the carpetas I stepped across it told me of its richness. I caught glimpses ofvelvet chairs, a high white marble mantelpiece, and what seemed tobe a suit of Japanese armour at one side of it. There was a chair justunder the lamp, and the elderly man motioned that I should sit init. The younger had left us, but he suddenly returned throughanother door, leading with him a gentleman clad in some sort ofloose dressing-gown who moved slowly towards us. As he came into thecircle of dim light which enabled me to see him more clearly I wasthrilled with horror at his appearance. He was deadly pale andterribly emaciated, with the protruding, brilliant eyes of a man whosespirit was greater than his strength. But what shocked me more thanany signs of physical weakness was that his face was grotesquelycriss-crossed with sticking-plaster and that one large pad of it wasfastened over his mouth.

During the first week of July, my friend had been absent so oftenand so long from our lodgings that I knew he had something on hand. The fact that several rough-looking men called during that time andinquired for Captain Basil made me understand that Holmes wasworking somewhere under one of the numerous disguises and names withwhich he concealed his own formidable identity. He had at least fivesmall refuges in different parts of London, in which he was able tochange his personality. He said nothing of his business to me, andit was not my habit to force a confidence. The first positive signwhich he gave me of the direction which his investigation was takingwas an extraordinary one. He had gone out before breakfast, and Ihad sat down to mine when he strode into the room, his hat upon hishead and a huge barbed-headed spear tucked like an umbrella underhis arm.

"They must have lost my track completely after their bludgeonman wasarrested. Otherwise they could not have imagined that I had returnedto my rooms. They have evidently taken the precaution of watching you, however, and that is what has brought Moriarty to Victoria. Youcould not have made any slip in coming?"

"Did you hear from Mr. Staunton in London?"

"All the better. During this long period no one wants anythingfrom you. Now suddenly within three or four days you have urgentdemands. What would you gather from that?"

Fairbank was a good-sized square house of white stone, standing backa little from the road. A double carriage-sweep, with a snow-cladlawn, stretched down in front to two large iron gates which closed theentrance. On the right side was a small wooden thicket, which led intoa narrow path between two neat hedges stretching from the road tothe kitchen door, and forming the tradesmen's entrance. On the leftran a lane which led to the stables, and was not itself within thegrounds at all, being a public, though little used, thoroughfare.Holmes left us standing at the door and walked slowly all round thehouse, across the front, down the tradesmen's path, and so round bythe garden behind into the stable lane. So long was he that Mr. Holderand I went into the dining-room and waited by the fire until he shouldreturn. We were sitting there in silence when the door opened and ayoung lady came in. She was rather above the middle height, slim, withdark hair and eyes, which seemed the darker against the absolutepallor of her skin. I do not think that I have ever seen such deadlypaleness in a woman's face. Her lips, too, were bloodless, but hereyes were flushed with crying. As she swept silently into the room sheimpressed me with a greater sense of grief than the banker had done inthe morning, and it was the more striking in her as she wasevidently a woman of strong character, with immense capacity forself-restraint. Disregarding my presence, she went straight to heruncle and passed her hand over his head with a sweet womanly caress."You have given orders that Arthur should be liberated, have younot, dad?" she asked.

"You have come to me to tell your story, have you not?" said he."You are fatigued with your haste. Pray wait until you haverecovered yourself, and then I shall be most happy to look into anylittle problem which you may submit to me."

< "It is my business." "The shadow has moved!" I cried.

"It is, of course, well known to you that in a successful bankingbusiness as much depends upon our being able to find remunerativeinvestments for our funds as upon our increasing our connection andthe number of our depositors. One of our most lucrative means oflaying out money is in the shape of loans, where the security isunimpeachable. We have done a good deal in this direction during thelast few years, and there are many noble families to whom we haveadvanced large sums upon the security of their pictures, libraries, orplate.

< "Such a remark is unworthy of you, Holmes. It shows me veryclearly the state of your own nerves. But if you have no confidence inme I would not intrude my services. Let me bring Sir Jasper Meek orPenrose Fisher, or any of the best men in London. But someone you musthave, and that is final. If you think that I am going to stand hereand see you die without either helping you myself or bringing anyoneelse to help you, then you have mistaken your man." "Perhaps you would like me to stay there to-night?"

"Good heavens!" cried Holmes in amazement. "How did he die?""Perhaps you would care to step in, sir, and see his brother,Colonel Valentine?"

This resolution of mine was not due toany lack of material, since I have notes of many hundreds of casesto which I have never alluded, nor was it caused by any waninginterest on the part of my readers in the singular personality andunique methods of this remarkable man. The real reason lay in thereluctance which Mr. Holmes has shown to the continued publicationof his experiences. So long as he was in actual professionalpractice the records of his successes were of some practical valueto him, but since he has definitely retired from London and betakenhimself to study and bee-farming on the Sussex Downs, notoriety hasbecome hateful to him, and he has peremptorily requested that hiswishes in this matter should be strictly observed. It was only upon myrepresenting to him that I had given a promise that "The Adventureof the Second Stain" should be published when the times were ripe, andpointing out to him that it is only appropriate that this longseries of episodes should culminate in the most importantinternational case which he has ever been called upon to handle, that I at last succeeded in obtaining his consent that a carefullyguarded account of the incident should at last be laid before thepublic. If in telling the story I seem to be somewhat vague in certaindetails, the public will readily understand that there is an excellentreason for my reticence. 【详细】
