4. Carrie heard this passively. The peculiar state which she was inmade it sound like the welcome breath of an open door. Drouetseemed of her own spirit and pleasing. He was clean, handsome,well-dressed, and sympathetic. His voice was the voice of afriend.
5. "Yes," she answered, frankly and tenderly.
6. It was when Carrie was alone, looking out across the park, thatshe would be listening to this. It would come infrequently--whensomething else did not interfere, when the pleasant side was nottoo apparent, when Drouet was not there. 5. "Oh, go on. What have you got to be afraid of? It's a cheapcompany. The rest of them aren't as good as you are."

{ Once seated, there began that exhibition of showy, wasteful, andunwholesome gastronomy as practised by wealthy Americans, whichis the wonder and astonishment of true culture and dignity theworld over. The large bill of fare held an array of dishessufficient to feed an army, sidelined with prices which madereasonable expenditure a ridiculous impossibility--an order ofsoup at fifty cents or a dollar, with a dozen kinds to choosefrom; oysters in forty styles and at sixty cents the half-dozen;entrees, fish, and meats at prices which would house one overnight in an average hotel. One dollar fifty and two dollarsseemed to be the most common figures upon this most tastefullyprinted bill of fare.

He swashedabout (cautioned though he was to maintain silence concerning hispast theatrical relationships) in such a self-confident mannerthat he was like to convince every one of his identity by merematter of circumstantial evidence.
