1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 To-morrow came, and the next, and the next.
2. "Well, we'll see about that. It seems to me you're trying to runthings with a pretty high hand of late. You talk as though yousettled my affairs for me. Well, you don't. You don't regulateanything that's connected with me. If you want to go, go, butyou won't hurry me by any such talk as that."
3. "Huh! there's a lot back there yet," said a man farther up,leaning out and looking back at the applicants for whom thecaptain was pleading.
4. "Glad you liked them," he answered, simply.
5. While she was waiting to be noticed, the door of the hall bedroomopened and from it issued two very mannish-looking women, verytightly dressed, and wearing white collars and cuffs. After themcame a portly lady of about forty-five, light-haired, sharp-eyed,and evidently good-natured. At least she was smiling.
6. She opened her purse and laid down a half dollar. He pretendednot to notice it.

1. "I meant to," he said, "but you know I forgot it until it was toolate to do any good."
2. "Certainly," she answered. Then, with an air of one who did notintentionally mean to create trouble, "He came lots of times. Ithought you knew."
3. "Why, I was just over there this afternoon--Mrs. Hale and I.Aren't they beautiful?"
4. Carrie did not know it, but there was the least show of wrinklesbetween her eyes and her mouth was puckered quaintly.
5. "What?" said Hanson.
6. "I'll have to leave you behind this time."

1. Carrie looked vacantly at the richly carpeted floor. A new lightwas shining upon all the years since her enforced flight. Sheremembered now a hundred things that indicated as much. She alsoimagined that he took it on her account. Instead of hatredspringing up there was a kind of sorrow generated. Poor fellow! What a thing to have had hanging over his head all the time.
2. "He's delightful, delightful," he went on, giving the commonplacerendition of approval which such men know. He sent Drouet aftera programme, and then discoursed to Carrie concerning Jeffersonas he had heard of him. The former was pleased beyondexpression, and was really hypnotised by the environment, thetrappings of the box, the elegance of her companion. Severaltimes their eyes accidentally met, and then there poured intohers such a flood of feeling as she had never before experienced. She could not for the moment explain it, for in the next glanceor the next move of the hand there was seeming indifference, mingled only with the kindest attention.
3. "Yes," said Hurstwood, lying blandly. "I'm just going for ashave."
4. It is to be observed that the man did not justify himself tohimself. He was not troubling about that. His whole thought wasthe possibility of persuading Carrie. Nothing was wrong in that.He loved her dearly. Their mutual happiness depended upon it.Would that Drouet were only away!
5. "That'll do," he assented.
6. "Come with me in here a minute," she exclaimed, turning into astore.

1. The new arrangement might have worked if sickness had notintervened. It blew up cold after a rain one afternoon whenCarrie was still without a jacket. She came out of the warm shopat six and shivered as the wind struck her. In the morning shewas sneezing, and going down town made it worse. That day herbones ached and she felt light-headed. Towards evening she feltvery ill, and when she reached home was not hungry. Minnienoticed her drooping actions and asked her about herself.
2. For all his study nothing came of the evening except this--hesent the money. It was with great opposition, after two or threehours of the most urgent mental affirmation and denial, that atlast he got an envelope, placed in it the requested amount, andslowly sealed it up.
3. "Why, Sister Carrie!" she began, and there was embrace ofwelcome.
4、 It was not long, however, before the old worry was back forconsideration, and with it what weariness! He thought of themorrow and the suit. He had done nothing, and here was theafternoon slipping away. It was now a quarter of four. At fivethe attorneys would have gone home. He still had the morrowuntil noon. Even as he thought, the last fifteen minutes passedaway and it was five. Then he abandoned the thought of seeingthem any more that day and turned to Carrie.
5、 "Work, you blackguards," yelled a voice. "Do the dirty work. You're the suckers that keep the poor people down!"

His spirits fell, however, when, upon reaching the park, hewaited and waited and Carrie did not come. He held his favouritepost for an hour or more, then arose and began to walk aboutrestlessly. Could something have happened out there to keep heraway? Could she have been reached by his wife? Surely not. Solittle did he consider Drouet that it never once occurred to himto worry about his finding out. He grew restless as heruminated, and then decided that perhaps it was nothing. She hadnot been able to get away this morning. That was why no letternotifying him had come. He would get one to-day. It wouldprobably be on his desk when he got back. He would look for itat once.

      "Stand over there," he said.

"Now," he said, addressing first Carrie and then Drouet with hiseyes, "you must be ready at 7.30. I'll come and get you."

That night Hurstwood remained down town entirely, going to thePalmer House for a bed after his work was through. He was in afevered state of mind, owing to the blight his wife's actionthreatened to cast upon his entire future. While he was not surehow much significance might be attached to the threat she hadmade, he was sure that her attitude, if long continued, wouldcause him no end of trouble. She was determined, and had worstedhim in a very important contest. How would it be from now on? Hewalked the floor of his little office, and later that of hisroom, putting one thing and another together to no avail.

For some days thereafter he put on his overcoat regularly in themorning and sallied forth. On these ventures he first consoledhimself with the thought that with the seven hundred dollars hehad he could still make some advantageous arrangement. Hethought about going to some brewery, which, as he knew, frequently controlled saloons which they leased, and get them tohelp him. Then he remembered that he would have to pay outseveral hundred any way for fixtures and that he would havenothing left for his monthly expenses. It was costing him nearlyeighty dollars a month to live.

Next week came, but Carrie saw no change. Hurstwood seemed moreapathetic than ever. He saw her off mornings to rehearsals andthe like with the utmost calm. He read and read. Several timeshe found himself staring at an item, but thinking of somethingelse. The first of these lapses that he sharply noticedconcerned a hilarious party he had once attended at a drivingclub, of which he had been a member. He sat, gazing downward, and gradually thought he heard the old voices and the clink ofglasses.

A few weeks later Drouet, in his peregrinations, encountered oneof his well-dressed lady acquaintances in Chicago on his returnfrom a short trip to Omaha. He had intended to hurry out toOgden Place and surprise Carrie, but now he fell into aninteresting conversation and soon modified his originalintention.

{ She went hunting aimlessly through the crowded columns. Her mindwas distracted by this man's indifference. The difficulty of thesituation she was facing was only added to by all he did. Self-commiseration brewed in her heart. Tears trembled along hereyelids but did not fall. Hurstwood noticed something.
